Abstract
The novel The Scarlet Letter by the American writer Nathaniel Hawthorne is considered one of the masterpieces of American literature, in which he dealt with many ideas related to society, its ethics, beliefs, attitudes and reactions towards the behavior of individuals. Verbal references are expressions and words that the writer uses to refer to a specific place, time, or person in a specific context. Therefore, these expressions do not have fixed meanings, but their meanings are understood through the context within the sentences, where the meaning depends on the place, time and people in the situation or context itself. The semantic meanings of these expressions They differ according to the context in which they are mentioned, and from here the researcher deals with the writer's linguistic ability to use these expressions to make his message a universal message .The Scarlet Letter is one of the multi-ideal novels that tries hard to discover new topics, especially the societal laws of guilt and sin. The novel illustrates the writer’s internal revolution and his rebellion against the ideas of his society and his dealings with individuals, and this is what the researcher tried hard through critical analysis of these methods.
