للوجود معنيان، أولا: ملاحظة الوجود من حيث مظاهره الخارجية، ثانيا: من حيث حقيقته الذاتية، والوجود من حيث هو في حقيقته الذاتية، وبقطع النظر عن تعیناته الخارجية، هو المطلق الذي لا بشرط شيء، والغير مقيد بقيد حتى ولو کان قيد الإطلاق، وهو ما عناه الجيلي بصرافة الذات الساذج المجردة عن کل النسب والإضافات، وهو الوجود الذي لا ينحصر في أي شکل أو يحده أي قيد من القيود. بينما الذات، مصطلح يطلق على "الماهية" ويطلق على "حقيقة الشيء"، وله دلالة فلسفية تدل على "الموجود المحض" إشارة إلى الوجود الإلهي، وله أيضا دلالة ميتافيزيقية تدل على غيب الأحدية، أو مرتبة العماء المقدم السابق على الوجود.
Existence has two meanings, first: observing existence in terms of its external manifestations, secondly: in terms of its subjective reality, and existence as it is in its subjective reality, regardless of its external determinations. What Al-Jili meant by the exchanging of the naive self, stripped of all lineage and additions, which is an existence that is not confined to any form or limited by any restriction. While the subject is a term called “the essence” and is called the “reality of the thing,” and it has a philosophical connotation indicating “the purely existing” referring to the divine presence, and it also has a metaphysical connotation indicating the unseenness of oneness, or the rank of blindness prior to existence.
