Investigating Discourse markers, Turn-taking and Refusal Strategies in Caitlin Moran’s How to Build a Girl

This study aims to review and discuss two main elements of discourse analysis (i.e. turn taking and discourse markers); the speech act of refusing in Caitlin Moran’s How to Build a Girl. Features of turn taking are analyzed based on the conversation analysis (CA), which systematically analyzes daily-life situation talks of human interaction. Caitlin Moran is a British journalist who has handled various topics related to feminist issues. How to Build a Girl is an autobiographical novel whose heroine ‘Johanna’ resembled Moran in her upbringing in Wolverhampton and in her career. According to Snircova (2016), the discourse of Moran’ How to Build a Girl strikes an exemplary modal of how girl power influences the literary text..
