الباطنية هي مجموعة فرق إسلامية مبتدعة تعتقد أن للشريعة ظاهرًا وباطنًا وأن لکل ظاهر باطنًا ولکل تنزيل تأويلًا".
ومنهجهم في إدراک الحقائق هو التأويل الباطني، فالحقائق -في اعتقادهم- لا توجد إلا في المعاني الباطنة، أما المعاني "الظاهرة " فهي حجب مضطربة وأقنعة متناقضة، ومريدو الاندماج فيها تزاح عنهم هذه الحجب والأقنعة بالقدر الذي يناسب استعداداتهم، ويتدرجون في هذا المضمار حتى تتهيأ لهم المقدرة على مواجهة الحقائق وهي سافرة، وهذا هو ما حدا بالفقهاء إلى تسمية أصحاب هذه العقائد بالباطنية.

Their method in perceiving the facts is the inner interpretation, for the facts - in their belief - are found only in the hidden meanings, as for the “apparent” meanings, they are turbulent veils and contradictory masks, and those who want to integrate into them, these veils and masks are removed from them to the extent that suits their preparations, and they gradually move in this field until they are prepared They have the ability to face the facts while they are blatant, and this is what prompted the jurists to label the owners of these beliefs as esoteric.
