القصر في اللغة الحبس، قال تعالى: {حُوْرٌ مَقْصُوْرَاْتٌ فِيْ الخِيَامِ} أي محبوسات. وفي الأساس: قصرته حبسته وقصرت نفسي على هذا إذالم تطمح إلى غيره، وهن قاصرات الطرف أي قصرنه على أزواجهن، وقصر هذه اللقمة على عياله وعلى فرسه إذا جعل درهمًا لهم.
وتقول: قصرت المرأة على أعمال البيت وتربية الأولاد أي حبستها عليه.
فالقصر في اللغة الحبس، وفي الاصطلاح تخصيص شيء "صفة أو موصوف" بشيء "موصوف أو صفة" بطريق مخصوص .
