يهدف العلم الى فهم العالم الطبيعى ، وتفسير ما يحدث فيه من ظواهر ووقائع. وينتهى بنا فهم العالم بعد وصف حوادثه وتفسير ظواهره الى إقامة نسق نظرى ينطوى على القوانين التى تسير هذا العالم ، مما يتيح لنا قدرة ما على التنبؤ بأحداث قد تقع فى العالم فى المستقبل . راح الانسان يبحث عن السنن القوانين التي تحرك العالم بوصفه نسقا مركبا ، ولم يفلح الانسان في مسعاه إلا من خلال البحث ، والبحث العلمي بالذات الذي أيقظ لديه ملكات التفكير السببى والتحليلى ، وقلل من شأن الاساليب التقليدية مثل الرجم بالغيب أو التوصل الى نتائج دون الاعتماد على مقدمات كافية
