الحواس من النعم التي أنعم الله بها على المخلوقات الحية ، فهي تجعلهم يشعرون بما في الدنيا من جمال ، كما أنها لها دور في تجنبهم لبعض المخاطر المحيطة بهم ، وهي التي تغذي ملكة الخيال والتصور عند المبدعين ، فـــــ " الحواس كلها هي الوسائل التي تغذي ملكة التصور والخيال وتنقل إليها مجتمعة أو منفردة الصورة بشتى مصادرها وطبائعها " ( ) .
ويرى جابر عصفور أن الجاحظ يأتي في طليعة النقاد الذين طرحوا فكرة الجانب الحسي للشعر ، " إن الجاحظ عندما طرح فكرة التصوير في مواجهة النظرة اللغوية إلى الشعر متمثلة في أبي عمرو الشيباني .
