Youssef Chahine's Al-Ard: Film Adaptation

The present paper examines the intertextual relation in the context of the novel-to-film adaptation as shown in Abdel- Rahman Al- Sharqawi’s Novel Al-Ard into Youssef Shahin’s Film: Al-Ard (The Land). Linda Hutcheon’s approach of adaptation proposes a reliable model of analysis to novel-to-film adaptations as seen in her book A Theory of Adaptation (2013). Her model is employed to investigate and show the extent of success or failure that the filmmakers encounter in their path across the novel and its novel-to-film adaptation. The novel is analyzed, discussed, and compared to its adapted film. The analysis is performed on several levels including: the titles, the opening scenes, the narration, the description, their authors’ point(s) of view, the inner thoughts, the emotions, the characterization, the socio-historical context, their aural elements that are classified into music and soundtrack, their visual elements like mise-en-scene, the costumes, the actors, and their temporal and spacial elements. The paper also discusses the excluded, modified, and added scenes aiming at reaching an objective outcome. These elements altogether help revealing the different ideologies and mindset of the filmmaker behind this adaptation, which help in reaching an understanding of all the implied messages, either to amplify a certain philosophy or to hide another and to reveal what are the elements of plot and characters that are retained, exaggerated and glossed over along with the process of literary adaptation. It also illustrates that novel-to-film adaptation can create a new vision to a literary work.
