يعد البناء الهيكلي للقصيدة دعامة رئيسة من دعائم النتاج الشعري، فقد يعكس رؤية الشاعر وطريقة معالجته للقضايا المطروحة في خاطره، كما يعكس جوانب من الحياة الاجتماعية والفكرية للعصر ، وقد وقف نقادنا القدامى على القصيدة العربية القديمة، فعرفت عندهم ببناء محدد التزم به الشعراء الجاهليون ونظموا فيه جل أشعارهم ، ويبدو أنه أصبح سنة من غير المألوف مخالفتها , ونرى التقاء أغلب النظريات النقدية على تحديد مصطلح البناء أو البنية ، أو الهيكل في العمل الشعري ، على أنه تطور ونمو وحدة العمل الفني في النتاج الشعري .
