An Intertextuality-based Approach to Analyzing Prophetic Texts

This paper aims at applying the theory of intertextuality to Prophetic discourse. It attempts to investigate the theory of intertextuality in Prophetic Hadiths by describing, exploring and analyzing Quranic intertextuality in some Prophetic sayings taken from Imam An-Nawawi's Forty Hadith collection. The main hypothesis of the research is that identifying intertextual relationships in Prophetic sayings would help the translators transfer the intended meaning into the target language and that linguistic competence alone does not guarantee the safe transference of intertextual elements into the target language. The research used two major tools provided by intertextuality theory: micro-level-intertextuality (lexico-grammar elements) and macro-level-intertextuality (textual elements). The research has shown that intertextual expressions in Prophetic texts range from a single word to macro-textual conventions. Given the religious nature of Prophetic sayings with their wording and meaning being from the Messenger (PPBUH), it can be argued that vertical intertextuality may relate to Hadith style – the text organization. The research paper concluded that only when intertextual elements are identified, Hadith translators can grasp the intended meaning of the source text.
