استطاع الإسلام ان يصبغ الحياة حوله بصبغته بدون أن يفرض على الناس كهنوتا في فهمهم الدين، أو وساطة في علاقتهم بالله، أو إجبارًا في تحديد طريق حياتهم. ومن هذا المنطلق ظهر التصوف وانتشر وصار له مؤيدوه ومعارضوه وتباينت الأفكار حوله، ففريق معه، وآخر ضده، وثالث متوقف، وكل له وجهته وفكره. وعلى الرغم من أن التصوف الإسلامي في معظم جوانبه قد حظي بدراسات كثيرة ومتنوعة، خاصة في العصر الحديث إلا أن إعطاء فكرة واضحة عن كثير من قضاياه ومسائله لا يزال قليلاً، وليس ذلك راجعاً إلي التصوف في دراسته، أو إلى الصوفيةIslam was able to imbue life around it with its colour, without imposing on people a priesthood in their understanding of religion, or mediation in their relationship with God, or a coercion in determining their path of life. From this standpoint, Sufism appeared and spread, and it had supporters and opponents, and ideas around it differed, with one group being with it, another against it, and a third stopping, and each one had its own direction and thought. Although Islamic Sufism in most of its aspects has received many and varied studies, especially in the modern era, giving a clear idea about many of its issues and issues is still limited, and this is not due to Sufism in its study, or to Sufism.
