عالج الفكر العربي الأسئلة والإشكاليات التي طرحها مفهوم الحداثة، وفقاً للمعارف التي أتاحها الواقع التاريخي والثقافي والحضاري العربي والعالمي. وقد ظهرت هذه الأسئلة والإشكاليات في الفكر العربي منذ ما يزيد عن قرن ونصف من الزمن، وتفاوتت الإجابات في تلك المرحلة التاريخية من حيث وضوحها وعمق تحليلها ونضج نتائجها، تفاوتاً يتناسب وحركة تطور التاريخ السياسي والاقتصادي والاجتماعي العربي، ويتماشى مع تطور معارف المثقف العربي ووعيه بحركة التاريخ الإنساني، وبالواقع الثقافي والحضاري العربي والعالمي السائد في كل مرحلة.
Arab thought addressed the questions and problems posed by the concept of modernity, in accordance with the knowledge made available by the Arab and global historical, cultural and civilizational reality. These questions and problems appeared in Arab thought more than a century and a half ago, and the answers varied at that historical stage in terms of their clarity, the depth of their analysis, and the maturity of their results, a disparity commensurate with the movement of development of Arab political, economic, and social history, and in line with the development of the knowledge of the Arab intellectual and his awareness of the movement of history. humanity, and the prevailing Arab and international cultural and civilizational reality at every stage.
