Rendering Culture-Bound Terms in the English Translation of Radwa Ashour's The Woman from Tantoura

Practicing literary translation is a challenging activity. Being a reflection of society, literary texts usually pose culture-related challenges to translators. Some concepts, beliefs and attitudes are only found in a given culture and never found in another. This study investigates the rendition of culture-bound terms (CBTs) found in the English translation of Radwa Ashour's The Woman from Tantoura. It aims at identifying the translator's tendency to either domesticate or foreignize the text based on Venuti's (1995) definition of the two strategies. To achieve this, first, all culture-bound terms were identified and categorized in accordance with Newmark's (1988) classification of culture. Therefore, 66 terms were identified and categorized into 7 categories. Second, each term was examined to determine which procedure of Bakr's (1992) model was used in its rendition. Procedures of borrowing and paraphrasing using a related word or words were considered foreignizing, whereas translation by a more general word was considered domesticating. Finally, the number of occurrences of each translation strategy was calculated in order to identify their frequency percentage. The results showed that CBTs found in The Woman from Tantoura are foreignized at 89.39%.
