Over the last few decades, postfeminism has become an important critical tool for studying gender issues. The quest for women’s liberation and empowerment has been a major concern of postfeminism, and a prominent social issue in Western culture during the twentieth century as well. This research aims to examine the conceptions of female liberation and empowerment expressed in Maria Irene Fornés’s Fefu and Her Friends from a postfeminist lens. To achieve this purpose, the researcher investigates how the playwright discusses gender issues and depicts the gender roles in her play. The significance of this study is that it provides a postfeminist reading to one of the most important plays in the 20th century that is often classified as a feminist play on wrong bases. Drawing on a close reading of Fornés’s play, the study examines how Fornés tackles the postfeminist concepts of liberation and empowerment in her play. The researcher demonstrates that Fornés portrays women who are no longer contend with the oppressive conventional traditions of their patriarchal society. They spend efforts to build their personality to be independent, free, and powerful persons. However, not all the characters succeed to get rid of the restrictions of their society.
